A year ago I was in beautiful Australia with beautiful scenery and wonderful friends making magical memories. Now I'm a college graduate, living in Boston, with a full time job and a boatload of student debt. I have piles of debt higher than the snowbanks outside my front door.

It's been a year of transition and transitions often cause lots of emotions. And its often interesting to see how people leverage their emotions when traversing transition, making decisions and living life.

Some people eat (lots.) Some run (away.) Some sleep. Some work furiously. Some do nothing. Some yell, fight, scream, kill (oh, no.) Some cry. Emotions manifest in lots of ways, right?

Lately I've been feeling lots of things about lots of situations. Finances, vocations, creativity, relationships, spirituality, et cetera, et cetera...

So I'm hoping to leverage my thoughts and emotions by channeling them in creative, productive ways. Two things that have taken a lot of my brainspace lately are personal finance and creative drive. So hopefully I'll be able to constructively and consistently talk about and dive into these two ideas (among others) rather than allowing them to mull around in my brain while simultaneously making me lose my hair.
The semester is flying by!

Week 3 was pretty low-key. It was my first week on call, which was incredibly quiet, but it limited how far I could be away from the building.

The highlight for the week was an overnight field trip with my political science class to Canberra, the nation's capital. Described as a cemetery with streetlights by my professor, the city is a tad weird. Sydney and Melbourne couldn't decide who should be the capital so, naturally, they decided to build a city from scratch in between the two existing metropolises.

Neither Parliament nor University were in session, so the town was rather dead when we visited, but we still visited a few cool spots.

~~

Day 1, we visited the National Museum of Australia, a comprehensive look at Australian history and culture. History in Australia is a peculiar thing. It's much shorter than American history (the east coast of Australia was first encountered by Capt. James Cook in 1770 v. Christopher Columbus' discovery of the New World in 1492) and they're also much more candid and honest about injustices forced onto Aboriginal people. Until now, I never noticed or realized how little we, as Americans, talk about our relationship with American Indians and the indigenous people of North America. Australia seems much more conversational and apologetic about the topic, while we continue to ignore our native people groups. (History length and population size/ratio are potential reasons for this, no doubt.)

TL;DR It was a great museum

PHOTO

The Australian War Memorial was a another very large museum which looked at Australian involvement in military conflicts. It also acts as a memorial for fallen Australian soldiers and holds the tomb of the unknown Australian soldier. Each day is closed with the Last Post ceremony.

Coming from a military family, it was a great experience and an insightful look at Australian military involvement.
~~

Night life in Canberra is pretty nonexistent. We had breakfast for dinner at a delicious tavern, then stopped by a chill Mexican cantina, saw the incredibly sad film "12 Years a Slave," ran through some sprinklers, star gazed for a few minutes and then passed out at our hotel.

~~

Day two, we visited Australia's legislative houses.

New Parliament House, opened in 1988, is a super snazzy and contemporary building. It houses the House of Representatives, the Senate, portraits of all the past PMs, and one of the original copies of Magna Carta.

PHOTO

Old Parliament House was used from 1927-1988 (even though they were federated in 1901.) It feels very 70s, which is funny because they're pretty serious about preserving their 70s historical artifacts (hence the white gloves.) Again, their concise history is interesting.

We reenacted the dismissal of PM Gough Whitlam, a very famous moment in Australia's political history. Similar to the assassination of JFK, everyone knows where they were when it went down. Its a tiny bit complicated, so I'm not going to try and explain it... #wikipediaarticle

Like any good Americans, we found a cafe inside Parliament to watch a bit of the Super Bowl and the half time show.

Oh and our bus kind of broke down and didn't have AC for the trip back in 90+F temps.

It was a packed two day field trip, but it was mad enjoyable and engaging.
Australia Day "celebrates" the First Fleet (of Europeans) to arrive and settle the continent on January 26, 1788. It's kind of an awkward holiday, much like Columbus Day in the States. Most Australians don't think much of it; they enjoy a day off work, hit the beach, have a few drinks, and watch some fireworks. On the other hand, many thoughtful academics look at the day as a shameful celebration of the imperial takeover of an occupied land, and the subsequent slaughter of its indigenous people.

The highlight of my day was the firework show at an absolutely packed Darling Harbour. It was the most incredible, extravagant, beautiful display I've ever seen. Lasting at least 20 minutes, the fireworks were launched from a floating dock in the middle of the harbor and were accompanied by a beautiful soundtrack and a great lighting set up. The best and classiest fireworks I've ever seen in my life.

Sorry for the lack of pictures, I was just taking it all in with my eyeballs.

The trip was planned Phi Beta Dingo, a local travel agency, and hosted by Dingo Jen, which was a wonderful way to see more sights than I would've on my own.

About fifty of us piled onto a coach and headed west. [Fun fact: it's illegal to eat or drink on a coach/bus in New South Wales.] Our first stop was the Sydney Olympic Park, home of the 2000 Summer Olympics. We didn't hang out long, but we did check out an area outside the main stadium with all the volunteer names and different track and field event results [Fun fact: A 25ft long jump won Ivan Pedroso the gold medal in 2000. I didn't know it was humanly possible to jump that far.]

Then we stopped at a wildlife park and saw [and touched and fed] all sorts of incredibly adorable animals. Enough said. More pictures to come.
[Fun fact: its illegal to hold a Koala in New South Wales]

I haven't been able to get rid of this cheesy smile since I've gotten here. #sorry

Next, we stopped for lunch in Leura, a small mountain town with lots of little quaint shops [the types of places Moms like to go], local eateries [where we had delicious meat pies], and a grocery store [where we got a great deal on a huge pack of timtams.]

We drove a little farther down the road to see the Three Sisters and hopped on the bus one last time to go for a little hike down into the Blue Mountains [They kind of reminded me of a shallower, forested version of the Grand Canyon.] It was all beautiful, of course. At the end of our hike, we jumped on the world's steepest railway to get back to the top.

My good friend Max let me bring Flat Stanley along with me on my trip to Australia. We took all different kinds of transportation, a bus, a train, and a plane, to get to our final destination: Sydney.

On the way there, we stopped in Shanghai, China to switch planes. It was dark outside and there wasn't much to do or see, so Stanley and I just read a little bit of news while we waited for our next plane.

Australia is a huge country, its actually about the same size as the United States. It was settled by the British a few years after the United States became a country, but native people, like the Native Americans, had been living on the land for thousands of years before.

Before I mailed Stanley home to Max, we stopped by a couple of Sydney's famous landmarks. The Sydney Harbor Bridge lets cars drive across the city and drive over all the ships that come and go from the harbor. The Sydney Opera House is a very unique building that hosts all sorts of concerts, performances and shows.

I've been in Sydney for just over a week now. Classes started yesterday after a couple days of great meetings, and a few days of longer/boring, meetings.

Outside of the meetings, I frequented Darling Harbour several times this week. It's a beautiful harbor with loads of restaurants, bars, street performers, ferry tours, and loads of other shops.

In hopes of becoming familiar with the area, the other ResLife staff and I went to a place called the Cargo Bar for delicious $10 steaks. I went back to the area the next night for a walk around the harbor. The whole program went there Friday night for a harbor cruise. And I went a fourth time on Sunday night for a kids film fest for a free screening of "Billy Elliot" in a great park nearby.

The harbor is just a beautiful place in general; really magical, almost cinematic (I felt like I was in a movie the first time I was there, just because everything and everyone is so cool here.) Everything is beautifully lit up at night. And even with the city lights and a full moon, we could still see the big dipper as we sat next to the water at midnight. Absolutely beautiful.

~~

Of course a week in Sydney wouldn't be complete without seeing the Opera House, the Sydney Harbor Bridge, and going to the beach.

All that, and more, was completed with a scavenger hunt-type day outing that the staff planned for us on Saturday. We checked out a few popular local markets, beautiful parks, and the beach (I only got burnt a little bit..). I could go into detail, but all you really need to know is that everything is beautiful here. And everyone is incredibly friendly. The BU faculty and staff have been incredibly kind and accommodating. Its unreal.

~~

The weeks ahead are packed full with classes, trips and adventures including:
-a day trip to the Blue Mountains (get ready for the kangaroo and koala pictures!)
-an overnight trip to the capital, Canberra, with my political science class
-a weekend at Surf Camp at 7 Mile Beach, north of Sydney, learning to surf
-an overnight hike in the Royal National Park, south of Sydney
-mid-semester break TBA, Cairns/Whitsunday Islands/Brisbane? (parents, send money! :) )

~~

All the pictures are from the Harbor Cruise, none of them actually show Darling Harbour, maybe I'll get a shot or two and post later..
It's here!

I remember talking to E. Drevets and and E. Bell my freshman year about how much I was looking forward to studying abroad (mostly from hearing their rave reviews and stories from their experiences) and I can't believe my journey is about to begin! Although Sydney, Australia is a little different than my original freshman plan of Niamey, Niger, I couldn't be more excited.

For anyone who's curious, here's my (complicated) plan to get to Sydney:

Friday
Bus from Harrisburg (12:30PM EST) -> Philadelphia
Philadelphia -> Newark (6:00PM EST)

Meet up with the wonderful Aubree and Chelsea Woods and hang out with the Woods family for the night.

Saturday
Grab a shuttle from Newark (10:00AM EST) -> JFK Airport (12:30PM EST)

Flight from JFK (3:30PM EST) -> Shanghai, China (7:25PM CST/ Sunday) [15h]
Flight from Shanghai (11:45PM CST) -> Sydney, Australia (1:30PM/ Monday) [10.75h]

A lot of hours later, I ARRIVE!

Time zones confuse me.
Wish me luck.
I'll try to update this once a week or so and keep you in the loop about where I'm at and what I'm up to.
I'll try to find a nice balance between sharing superficial photos of cool food I'm eating and my overwhelming worries about what I'm doing after I graduate. Enjoy! (If you want to...)

I've spent the last few days seeing friends, saying goodbyes, and packing up all my belongings.

Saturday I went swing dancing with an old friend who I'm grateful I reconnected with this fall. Afterwards, we caught a snazyy bluegrass band and she bought me a Foster's to send me off on my adventures down under.

Sunday morning I made it to Caring Community Church of God where I got to worship with some dear friends, say goodbye to them, and take their blessings along with me. Also, lots of people made "shrimp on the bawbee" jokes, it humored me. Or should I say humoured me.

Sunday afternoon, my favorite engaged couple took me to my first experience at the PA Farm Show, an unbelievably country experience with lots of farm animals, tractors, delicious food and large belt buckles. It's a huge deal in south central PA, and it was wonderful.
(Note the 1,000 pound butter sculpture. #merica)
I've been growing a beard for 105 days.
I'll be leaving Boston as a student for the last time in 96 days.
I came to Boston University as a student for the first time nearly two and a half years ago.

Wow.

A lot can happen in a hundred days, or a few years.

A hundred days ago I was regretting some poor decision making. I was coming down from the high I'd been riding in my previous post. I also found a new high in my Production 2 class and the great piece of collaboration we put together.

In the last one hundred days I've realized a couple (read: several) of my character flaws. I've been challenged. I've enjoyed my classes and learned a ton. I went home to Clarksville for the first time in two years and went to Alaska for the third time in a year.

I'm not very eloquent, but looking back to November, and looking back to Freshman year really excites and overwhelms me.

I've met hundreds of phenomenal humans and had thousands of meaningful and insightful conversations. I've laughed for hours and cried (only a couple times!) I've failed. I've seen skeletons from my past that proved to be more consequential than I ever thought they would be. I've finally understood life lessons my parents tried to ingrain in me over and over again as a kid. I've made the same bad life choices I tell my residents to avoid. I've made films, told stories. I've shot more than a thousand feet of 16mm film. I've matured; I've been inspired by my friends to not complain as much. I've eaten Dunkin Donuts out of the dumpster. I've pulled all nighters. I've roamed multiple cities at three in the morning. I've been challenged to love Jesus and people, to authentically and genuinely glorify my Creator. I've lived and it feels insanely wonderful.

WOWZA (I warned you about my lack of eloquence!) Life is unreal!
I'm not trying to be all feel-goody, butterflies-and-rainbows, flowers-and-glitter, or bacon-and-UFC (for you Driscoll fans.) But I do want to appreciate the insanely good life I've got going for me. I'm blessed.

And my head isn't so far in the clouds that I don't remember I've failed and screwed up too. And I haven't taken too many risks. I'm afraid of failure, commitment, and surrendering control. Things I want to change and get better at. But that's what the next 100 days are for, right?

How've you changed in the last 100 days? Where are you going in your next 100?A. Corbetthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12044604950451559661noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-962801236114539602.post-25087147974046906142012-10-01T17:39:00.000-07:002012-10-01T17:39:30.245-07:00Welcome to the good life...It's insane, really. This semester is full of goodness, and responsibility, and busyness, and stress.
But mostly goodness.
As a student, I'm taking a few history classes (Ancient Philosophy, Civil War, and Television) and a film production class. As a student leader I'm an RA in Warren Towers (my freshman stomping grounds) and a chapter leader in the ever-supportive Christian fellowship I'm in: InterVarsity. As a filmmaker, I get the opportunity to work on several 16mm shorts. And as a friend I get to enjoy old friendships and develop new ones.
Through all this busyness and responsibility, I've been overwhelmed with an intense amount of joy.
Life is really good.

But why? That's what I've been curious about. Why am I being so joyful in the often dreadful world of academia, or so awake in the tiring college lifestyle?
Several reasons, I think...

Acknowledging I can't keep up with this busyness on my own, saying "God, I'm trusting you'll get me through this craziness, you're number one."

Staying busy with things I love. (i.e. Jesus, people, and media creation)

Witnessing suffering, and realizing I literally have nothing to complain about.

Getting enough sleep. 'Nuff said.

Luck. No crazy professors, no academic disasters, great friends, a supportive community.

Not sure if this list is comprehensive or accurate, but regardless, life is good. I desperately hope you see the goodness in your life (even despite how cheesy or cliche that sounds.)

I got to meet Eric Marshall last September through a collegiate Christian fellowship, InterVarsity. He just finished up his grad work at MIT where he recently submitted his thesis on something extremely smart, dealing with nuclear nonproliferation (he's MAD smart).

Through this past year, we've gotten the chance to have many, many meals at Qdoba and get to know each other pretty well. We're both pretty similar (semi-southern guys from military backgrounds), so it's been fun hanging out and trying to absorb every ounce of wisdom I can from him. He's helped me grow an insane amount in all sorts of ways and its been refreshing to look at the last ten months and realized I've changed a good bit and I'm getting a tad better at doing life (only a tad, with a long road ahead of me...).

He's done with his grad work and is heading out of Boston this summer to do bigger and better things, so for one last hoorah we decided to hike Mt. Washington, the highest peak in New England. We hiked to the summit with another military brother, Carl, and despite the semi-crazy weather, the clouds eventually cleared out and it was a beautiful trip.

Eric, I literally can't thank you enough being an old man willing to share your thoughts and do life with college guys. You're a nice change of company when I'm constantly surrounded by 20-somethings. And most importantly I'm mad grateful for your commitment to our friendship and the effect you've had on my character. Have fun at West Point!

A few months ago, I randomly met Amy Hoffman through some mutual friends. She was hilarious, and genuine.
As I got to know her a bit better, I began to see an extremely passionate and happy human being. Someone who loves life, and wants you to do the same. Oh, and she's a stellar musician attending Berklee College of Music.
She's telling a pretty good story with her life.

When this project first formed in my head, it looked ENTIRELY different. My initial idea was to create a semi-fiction narrative about creative processes, drawing on frustrations and joys I've experienced this semester in Production 1. After much thought and many changes, I decided to narrow my focus and profile one artist and her creative process: Amy Hoffman.

From there, it moved away from her creative process and towards her contagious personality.

I was really happy with my last portrait, Home, but there were two areas I really feel like I could've improved upon. Therefore, throughout development I had two big goals:

Let the story tell itself (no preconceived notions)

Infuse personality into the project (who she is, not just what she does)

Amy and I spent a ton of time deciding where to take this project and how to do it. We both agreed it was hard to capture her charisma in under five minutes, but we were determined to do our best, even if it was just a sliver of her personality.

Amy, thanks so much for living a passionate, exciting life. And for being the chillest person ever to work with. Thanks for trusting me with your image and personality. I appreciate the huge chunk of time you took out of your schedule to make this happen. You're gonna do legit things. Sleep well; dream big.
Technical Notes:
The biggest lesson I learned from this project is that stuff can (and will) happen. Even to your actors. Two days after shooting, Amy got into a pretty rough bike accident (don't worry! she's almost back to 100%) when we, and our friend Steph, were biking the Boston Marathon route the night before the race. I had considered shooting a bit more later in the week, but scrapes and crutches don't' work well for comfort or continuity. She rested up and I worked with the footage I already had. Thankfully, it worked out really well.
Expect the unexpected!
Shot on a Canon T2i, lit with 2 Lowel Tota lights. Outdoor shots are on location in the Fens.
Music: "Roads? Where We're Going, We Don't Need Roads" by Amy Hoffman
Special Thanks to Rule Boston Camera and the whole gang over there, this couldn't have happened without them!
Being an overachiever, I did both. I attempted a portrait of my good friend Aubree Woods and her process as a skimmer of getting from the city to the shore.

This project was a huge learning experience as I begin to scratch the surface of documentary filmmaking. After attempting to create an image and impose my preconceived notions and assumptions onto Aubree, she politely told me "Uh, that's not me." A moment of shame came over me and I quickly changed direction.

It was a great reminder as to why I have a desire to create documentary style films. If I wanted a clean, polished and artificial story, I would head out to Hollywood. However, I want my stories to be real, raw and authentic.

We pulled everything together rather quickly, and scrambled to figure out when we could shoot. She was going home to New Jersey the weekend I had in mind to shoot and she was gracious enough to invite me into her home for the day to shoot. It was a quick whirlwind of a trip, but it was phenomenal and extremely rewarding.

With just four hours to shoot, both Aubree and I wish we could've been blessed with better waves and more time, but alas, we weren't. Nonetheless she was willing to go out in 50 degree weather, let the waves to throw her around for a few hours and be a part of this project. I'm extremely grateful.
